Lithic Analysis Seminar
نویسنده
چکیده
This course is intended to provide an in-depth introduction to contemporary methods in lithic analysis, with a special application to the Middle Paleolithic. Most of the readings, as well as my lectures will be in English, and therefore a good passive knowledge of English is required, but you will have the option to complete your written assignments and oral presentation in German. The readings and discussion will revolve around five themes that concern lithic artifacts in general, namely Morphology, Function, Style, Technology, and Taphonomy. Each week will consist of a half-hour lecture on the topic of the day, and the rest will be spent on discussing the readings. At the beginning of the course, I will hand out three ‘assemblages’ knapped by me, and on the next to last meeting, each of the student groups will be required to hand in a report for their assemblage. In the last class, I will reveal how the assemblages were made, and what the groups were able to discover about them. The final mark will be 40% dependent on class participation and 60% dependent on the final report. The final report should demonstrate that you thought about the stones, and that you tried to apply some of the theoretical and methodological insights obtained from the readings and lectures throughout the course to the material. I will be looking for clear and strong scientific reasoning more than getting the ‘right’ answers.Like most archaeological work, this is a cooperative project, so you are encouraged to talk to each other and to me about your assemblages.

Children in Archaeological Lithic Analysis
One assumption that persists in the field of archaeology is that it is easier to observe children within historic sites through toys or burials than it is to observe children within a prehistoric setting through lithic production. The purpose of this paper is to examine the current position of children within the prehistoric archaeological literature and to provide case studies of research that...
متن کاملShedding light on the Early Pleistocene of TD6 (Gran Dolina, Atapuerca, Spain): The technological sequence and occupational inferences
This paper aims to update the information available on the lithic assemblage from the entire sequence of TD6 now that the most recent excavations have been completed, and to explore possible changes in both occupational patterns and technological strategies evidenced in the unit. This is the first study to analyse the entire TD6 sequence, including subunits TD6.3 and TD6.1, which have never bee...
متن کاملCharacterizing the Late Pleistocene MSA Lithic Technology of Sibudu, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Studies of the African Middle Stone Age (MSA) have become central for defining the cultural adaptations that accompanied the evolution of modern humans. While much of recent research in South Africa has focused on the Still Bay and Howiesons Poort (HP), periods following these technocomplexes were often neglected. Here we examine lithic assemblages from Sibudu that post-date the HP to further t...
متن کاملExtracting Scar and Ridge Features from 3D-scanned Lithic Artifacts
We propose a method for computer analysis of 3D-scanned lithic artifacts. It provides a detailed description of the scars and ridges that were left on the surface of the stone tool while it was produced by knapping. Traditional documentation and research methods are based on hand drawn images of stone tools and manual measurements. Our algorithm enables automatic, objective and precise document...
متن کاملOrigin of a metamorphosed lithic clast in CM chondrite Grove Mountains 021536
A metamorphosed lithic clast was discovered in the CM chondrite Grove Mountains 021536, which was collected in the Antarctica by the Chinese Antarctic Research Exploration team. The lithic clast is composed mainly of Fe-rich olivine (Fo62) with minor diopside (Fs9.7–11.1Wo48.3–51.6), plagioclase (An43–46.5), nepheline, merrillite, Al-rich chromite (21.8 wt% Al2O3; 4.43 wt% TiO2), and pentlandit...
